This year we will be honoring Sister Mary Norberta Malinowski as the Norbert X. Dowd Community Service Award.  Sister Norberta has been the CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital for over 25 years, which has grown from a 36-bed facility to a 112-bed full service community hospital with outreach programs during her employ.  By recognizing the lack of basic healthcare services in some of the rural areas of Maine, Sister Norberta created family practices in small towns, which grew into its own healthcare network, subsidized by the hospital. She led the charge to organize small and midsized hospitals from Lincoln to Fort Kent into the Maine Health Alliance, to work through issues and challenges facing hospitals while remaining independent.  Not only has she touched the lives of patients, staff, and peers, but her community service spans numerous professional organizations and boards. Plus her community support includes many philanthropic endeavors thru St. Joseph Foundation and she even has dedicated hospital laundry and kitchen services to homeless shelters.
