River City Cinema presents "PROMISES"
Wednesday, July 30 2008

 Time: 7:00 PM

Directed by Carlos Bolado • B.Z. Goldberg • Justine Shapiro
Not Rated • 106 mins • In English, Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles.

Promises is a documentary film about the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis as seen through the eyes of seven children in Jerusalem. With the candor of youth, the children share their perceptions of themselves, their presumed enemies and their views of the future. Though the children live only 20 minutes apart, they exist in completely separate worlds; the physical, historical and emotional obstacles between them run deep.

Promises explores the nature of these boundaries and tells the story of a few children who dared to cross the lines to meet their neighbors. Rather than focusing on political events, the seven children featured in Promises offer a refreshing, human and sometimes humorous portrait of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

There will be refreshments and a discussion following the film. The film is sponsored by the Eastern Maine Chapter of Brit Tzedek v’Shalom (the Jewish Alliance for Justice and Peace) with support from River City Cinema.

Brit Tzedek v’Shalom is Hebrew for Alliance for Justice and Peace. In just four years, it has become America’s largest Jewish peace group with over 38,000 supporters and 40 chapters nationwide. Chapters are beginning to form in Maine. Recently, member of Eastern Maine Brit Tzedek v’Shalom met with members of Maine’s congressional delegation to encourage active support of a two state peace resolution for the Middle East.
