L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale)
Sunday, February 22 2009

Performed by members from the Curtis Institute of Music.

Curtis On Tour brings the extraordinary artistry of the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music to audiences nationwide. Ensembles composed of tomorrow’s leading musicians perform chamber music alongside the celebrated faculty and alumni of the conservatory.

Their performances embody the remarkable traditions of Curtis, where individually tailored study with a faculty of renowned musicians has nurtured a long line of great performers, from Leonard Bernstein to the Guarneri Quartet to Hilary Hahn. Students at this intimate, Philadelphia-based conservatory "learn by doing," performing frequently and often collaborating side-by-side with their teachers. Curtis On Tour captures this irresistible meeting of youthful exuberance and seasoned artistry. The group will be performing the musically vivid, touching, and humorous, Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale) that is based on a Russian folk tale of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil and soon regrets it. Curtis On Tour will present the original version of the work featuring a septet of musicians, a conductor and a narrator.
