Glancing at Glenburn
The Town of Glenburn is located approximately 8.5 miles northwest of the City of Bangor. The community is mostly rural residential with a few small businesses scattered throughout. The town government is charter, town manager, and town council. All of our committee and board members are volunteers from the town. The Penobscot County Sheriff's department provides law enforcement, and a voluntary fire department provides fire protection.
Glenburn was originally incorporated on January 29, 1822 and was called "Dutton" in honor of Bangor's Samuel Dutton. Mr. Dutton had a major interest in the original township, and he later became Judge of Probate, a founder of the Bangor Theological Seminary, and an agent for others owning land in the county of Penobscot. In March 18, 1837, the town's name was changed to its current name of Glenburn which is believed to have come from the Scottish words "glen", a narrow valley, and "burn", a small stream in a narrow valley, which refers to the Kenduskeag Stream that flows through the town. The beauty and adventure of the stream is enjoyed by our residents as well as many canoeists and whitewater rafters from throughout the State who participate in the well known Kenduskeag Stream Whitewater Rafting Competition held yearly.
Much of Glenburn borders beautiful Pushaw Lake where several residents enjoy year-round residency. There are also many seasonal properties on the lake. In the summertime, the Town offers the use of town owned Lakeside Landing to its residents. Residents can enjoy swimming, picnics, boating, and other summertime fun at the landing.
Glenburn also has many homesteads and farmlands with some still being working farms with livestock and growing crops. With new subdivisions being approved at a steady growth, new homes have become a constant within the town in the past several years. The town's population has grown to approximately 4,500.
The town has its own elementary school. The municipal library is housed in a wing attached to the school. The elementary school provides education for children in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. Presently, the town pays tuition for its high school students to attend a choice of five, highly regarded area high schools.
The Parks and Recreation Department offers many activities for both students and adults. Our recreation director provides up-to-date programs and sign-up information on the Local Access Channel, on the Glenburn recreation web pages, and in FirstClass Glenburn News.
