Holden is located east of Brewer on Route 1A. It hails a range of low mountains, creating the eastern boundary of the Penobscot Valley and Penobscot County. Residents (a large part of which are professionals form Bangor) choose this area to take advantage of breath-taking views provided by Mt. Katahdin to the north. Bald Mountain to the east, and the rolling hills that shield Penobscot Bay to the south and toward Down East Maine.

History

Incorporated April 13, 1852. Located just east of the City of Brewer, on U.S. Route 1A, Holden was first surveyed and settled by General John Blake, officer of the 5th Massachusetts Regiment (1775-1780). Many of the town’s first settlers were veterans of the revolutionary war, and their names are still associated with geographical locations around the town. Serviced first by stagecoach and then by rail, Holden continues to maintain a strong relationship with Brewer and Bangor, acting as a gateway to those cities from points further downeast.
